Ankamuthi Traditional Owners explain the social and cultural significance of Possession Island for their clan group and discuss the ways in which every member of the clan had a role to play in gathering various foods. 

In collaboration with the National Museum of Australia’s exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s voyage to Australia, this collection focuses on the history and culture of Indigenous communities along Australia’s east coast, from the locations Cook wrote about in his journals from that fateful voyage.

My language is Gunggari from South West Queensland.  I like to think that I have taken a role in all indigenous issues, not only language. When I was young, Aboriginal people, and girls in particular, were thought of as nothing. You had to do the best you could with what you had. We were brought up to believe that people were as good as we were but no better. I think it was the attitude way back then that changed things for me. All my adult life I have been involved in Aboriginal issues; education, health and language. Particularly for women and girls.

Bryon Powell takes us on another tour across Wadawurrung country. A young Indigo learns how to look for food like her ancestors at Kuaka-dorla, now known as Anglesea on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. A top Bongerimennin, now known as Flagstaff Hill lookout, Bryon shares an important story about how the land was created by two strong warriors from the dreaming. Borombeet is now known as Lake Burrumbeet, just out of Ballaarat. In the old people’s time itwas a place of significance because it was a constant source of water,rich in resources such as food and medicine. Now it is a large recreational area for boating, fishing and camping. Wadawurrung country stretches from the mountains to the sea. It includes hills, rivers and grassy plains,creeks and coasts and includes modern towns such as Werribee, Geelong and Ballarat in Victoria.

When the Sydney Water Board built a new seawall at Hill 60 sewerage works they asked artists, Lorraine Brown and Narelle Thomas from the Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation to design a mural. 

The mural stretches over 21-meters and consists of three panels that depict Aboriginal history of the area including the dreaming story of the Five Islands Reserve.

Kaitlyn Lodewikus is a young Ghangulu & Yiman woman from Mount Morgan in Central Queensland. Her journey into Language began August 2016 when her Uncle invited her to attend a Yiman Language Recovery workshop in Bundaberg. From this workshop she discovered a passion for Language. Inconsequently, she submitted an application and within the next month had moved to Bundaberg and was working at the Language Centre. Within the position as a Language Worker,her main roles are to organise Language Reference Group Meetings around Central Queensland and create Language Learning Resources. She has recently started teaching Language at Kindergartens within Bundaberg and ran Language Lessons at schools around Central Queensland for their NAIDOC Celebrations. Before attending the Language Workshop in 2016 she knew very little Language and now she knows parts of 11 languages.Kaitlyn made this video to share her language journey at Puliima, the 2017 Indigenous Languages and Technology forum in Cairns.

I get goose bumps sometimes when I hear language spoken. My heart beats fast and I feel really good, and sometimes I feel the tears falling from my eyes. It’s so rare these days to hear children speaking their language. When they do it’s joyful, it’s a joyful sound and I want to hear it more often. I want it to become natural again to hear language. I want to be able to take it for granted that, yes, someone’s speaking the language, instead of thinking, ‘Oh wow! Someone’s speaking the language’, because that’s where we are at the moment.

We included children of all ages from our Early Childhood Education and Care Service to participate in learning a song in Woiwurrung language. Our service is situated on Wurundjeri land in Carlton North Victoria, therefore, we respectfully asked elders from the Wurundjeri Council for permission to use the words for the song "heads shoulders knees and toes". This is one of the children's favourite songs and we chose it because we knew they were familiar with it. It is not the song that has been suggested by the Indigenous song competition but we are very excited to be participating in our own special way. Brooke from the Wurundjeri council came and taught us the song and it was a great day of fun, celebration and learning for us all. Thank you for this opportunity. My role in the school is teaching Wajarri language to year eleven and twelves. I work in a program that is about engaging young Indigenous girls and part of the program is language and culture. As well as teaching the language I make sure the program is culturally appropriate for the girls. I interact with parents, teachers, principals and that to make sure the girls are doing their best and happy in the program.
