### Year 7

Introduce the concept of variables as a way of representing numbers using letters (ACMNA175)

• Consider how different languages and cultures represent numbers and stories through symbols e.g. explore the use of iconography in a variety of Aboriginal languages and the range of symbols used to tell stories and compare these with other cultures and languages.

• NB: Be careful not to copy Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander symbols unless you have permission, rather make up your own symbols to express your own stories / problems.

### Year 8

Investigate the relationship between features of circles such as circumference, area, radius and diameter. Use formulas to solve problems involving circumference and area (ACMMG197)

• Explore the cultural significance of circles to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and language groups. Find out the local language words for circles and important related concepts.

Solve problems involving duration, including using 12- and 24-hour time within a single time zone (ACMMG199)

• Explore Tjukurrpa (dreaming in the Pitjantjatjara language of north-west south Australia and the Northern Territory) and the different ways people measure time both before contact and in contemporary times in a range of settings.

### Year 9

Express numbers in scientific notation (ACMNA210)

• Explore how scientific notation is built on a base 10 system and compare to the number systems in other languages and cultures. Learn the language words for numbers in local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages and investigate how their system/s work.

### Year 10

Construct and interpret box plots and use them to compare data sets (ACMSP249)

• Use parallel box plots to compare data about the distribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages still spoken by whole communities of people in Australia with that of Australian languages that are not spoken by whole communities.
